Doreen Cubie

Natural History and Science Writer

I'm a freelance magazine writer and specialize in natural history, science, the environment, nature travel, and gardening for wildlife.

My articles have been published in National Wildlife, Audubon, Wildlife Conservation, Nature Conservancy, WildernessNatural History, Islands, Yankee, American History, Sierra, Birder's World, Oceans, and a number of other national magazines.

My awards include the National Wildlife Federation's Trudy Farrand and John Strohm Magazine Writing Award.

When I'm not in the field with biologists tracking mountain goats, Burmese pythons, and assorted other wildlife species, I write from my home in South Carolina.

As an avian researcher, my focus is hummingbirds. I'm a master bird bander, and one of only 250 licensed hummingbird banders in the world. I have been studying wintering hummingbirds in the southeastern US since 2005. During the summer of 2011, I also continued my research project with Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in western Canada, expanding it into Alberta and British Columbia.
